Every year, Shark Week becomes the highlight of my daughter’s TV calendar. Its arrival usually coincides with our summer vacation, often concluding with a long day spent by the ocean, followed by the family gathered around the screen, captivated by these majestic creatures.
Yet, amidst the fascination, a persistent question lingers: Why would anyone willingly dive into shark-infested waters? Sharks, being apex predators armed with rows of razor-sharp teeth and a notorious history of attacks, instill an understandable fear. For me, that’s the cue to stay far, far away from any ocean where these creatures dwell. No questions asked.
But then there are these marine biologists and shark experts. They not only plunge into these waters but sometimes do so without the protective embrace of a cage. Some daredevils even extend their hands to touch these colossal, supposedly man-eating monsters. And I’m left there, watching from the safety of my couch, content in my decision to stay out of shark territory.
Yet, as I reflect on this apparent recklessness, I realize there’s a lesson to be gleaned here—a lesson about courage, fear, and the unwavering trust in one’s abilities.
The book of Joshua, in the Bible, speaks volumes about courage in the face of danger. In Joshua 1:9, God commands, “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Isn’t that what these daring individuals demonstrate—strength and courage in the presence of something terrifying? They defy fear, not because they’re ignorant of the danger, but because they believe in their training, knowledge, and the purpose that drives them. It’s a courage deeply rooted in understanding and preparation.
Much like these experts facing sharks, Joshua faced an intimidating task—leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. God’s assurance to him wasn’t the absence of danger but the promise of His constant presence. It was an invitation to rely on God’s strength amidst fear.
Similarly, courage in our lives isn’t the absence of fear but the audacity to confront it. It’s recognizing the risks, preparing diligently, and pushing forward despite the trembling knees and racing heartbeats. Courage often arises when we face our fears head-on, armed with faith and conviction.
For me, that fear of sharks might never dissipate, and that’s okay. But what I can glean from those brave souls facing these creatures is the significance of standing firm in the face of fear, armed with knowledge, training, and an unyielding trust in something greater than ourselves.
Sometimes, life throws us into shark-infested waters—situations that seem insurmountable and terrifying. But in those moments, we’re called to be like Joshua—to be strong and courageous, trusting in God’s unwavering presence and our preparedness.
While I might never embrace the waters where sharks roam, I can take a lesson from those who do. I can learn to face my fears head-on, equipped with faith, knowledge, and a resilience that comes from knowing I am not alone in the midst of life’s perilous seas.
